SAN LUIS—Volleyball fans got an early start to the weekend on Friday morning as Centennial High School hosted the 2013 edition of the Centennial Crossover Tournament. A series of five games included a crossover of Class 1A and Class 2A Southern Peaks League teams battling for early season glory.

The tournament opened a weekend that sees the Valley teams, including Adams State University, participating in 24 volleyball matches throughout the weekend. Alamosa High School will be hosting the Intermountain League Second Annual Kickoff Classic Volleyball Tournament in Plachy Hall on Saturday with a total of ten matches filling the day.

Even though there were a few glitches, a schedule snafu had teams scrambling around the two gyms at CHS, the tournament saw some good competition and went off with each team playing two games.

The day started with the host Rams defeating an Antonito Trojan team, that has made multiple strides to improve, in three sets in Gym One. They won 25-21, 25-15 and 25-15.

In the Gym Two, the La Veta Redskins found themselves in a heated battle with the Sierra Grande Panthers, who are under the direction of a new head coach, Kelli McCarty. The two teams battled with the Panthers taking a 24-22 lead before the Redskins battled back to take a 25-24 lead. An unfortunate carry call was called on the Panthers on their ensuing play giving the opening set to the Redskins 26-24.

In the second set, the two teams competed and with the strong serving of senior Mia Romero, who didn’t play a lot of varsity action in previous years, and senior Adrianna Manazarez. Coach McCarty did note that the Panthers were a young team with just two seniors and one junior, Kendra Holtcamp.
