Trial set in double homicide

Posted: Friday, Sep 6th, 2013

Daniel M. Bessey

DEL NORTE — Double homicide suspect Daniel M. Bessey, 43, was in court again Thursday as attorneys’ motions and a trial date were set.

Prosecutors have charged Bessey, 42, with numerous offenses, including two counts of first-degree murder, for the February 13, 2012, shooting deaths of John Salazar, 54, and Sarah Beasley, 29.

Bessey will be tried two years after the remains of Salazar and Beasley were found in and near the home they shared in Monte Vista.

The trial is scheduled for February 10-28, 2014.

On Thursday, motions ranged from the endorsement of expert witnesses and reports in the hands of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation to who would have access to files relating to domestic relations cases involving Beasley and Bessey, including child custody matters tried after Beasley’s death.

Twelfth Judicial District Judge Martin Gonzales said the files would be open to family members.

Sonya Steinhoff, Beasley’s mother, had sought access to the files, which had been sealed.
