ALAMOSA—Things are going in the right direction at the right time. Down. Yes, Alamosa High School’s golfers are getting their scores down as they near the final week of the season before the 2013 Regional Golf Tournament.
So good in fact, that people are starting to notice. On Tuesday, the Mean Moose squad traveled to Walking Stick Golf Course in Pueblo and participated in the Pueblo East Invitational and turned heads.
Senior Matt Benavidez jumped out to a stellar start to the tournament with 5-under-par on the first nine holes. On his tenth hole he was 6-under. “As I was watching, I thought to myself, he could set a new course record,” said Alamosa Head Coach Gary Smith.
As the final eight holes progressed, Benavidez could not maintain his run but was able to take home the tournament win with a score of 71, 1-under-par.
