APD snags man in theft attempt

Posted: Saturday, Aug 31st, 2013

ALAMOSA — A community corrections resident wasn’t street savvy enough to evade the Alamosa Police Department (APD) on Thursday after allegedly attempting to steal a car from Atencio’s Market on State Street.

Dustin Slater, 26, allegedly tried to take a blue Mazda CX9 belonging to Kristen Garcia, 23, Alamosa, from the grocery store’s parking lot after spotting that the car’s keys were left unattended in the ignition, according to the APD report. Garcia saw Slater begin to back out of the parking lot while still inside the store. She ran outside and made it to her vehicle in time to open the driver’s side door and punch the alleged thief, causing him to exit the car and flee on foot down Eighth Street.

Several witnesses chased Slater through a series of neighborhood yards, according to the APD report, and he was caught looking for an escape in the Alta Fuels parking lot. When he attempted to jump a fence, an APD officer took him into custody.
