I heard it again today. That statement that always manages to make me wince: “The thing that’s wrong with this country is all those people who feel entitled to things they didn’t work for.”
This is another example of how we use labels without fully understanding what the labels mean. The person who was making this statement believed they were talking about people on welfare or receiving benefits from other social programs.
Unfortunately, when we talk about “entitlements,” we’re talking about something completely different, and confusing the issue places the true entitlement programs in further jeopardy.
Entitlement programs include Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, and most Veterans Administration programs. The recipients feel “entitled” to them because they worked hard most of their lives and paid into them – a promise was made.
