San Luis Valley Potato Festival is next weekend

Posted: Thursday, Aug 29th, 2013

Children can get into the mashed potato action — literally.

MONTE VISTA — This year’s Annual Potato Festival is right around the corner on Saturday, Sept. 7, in Monte Vista. There are many things to look forward to and offers fun for people of all ages.

For kids, the festival will be having a Kids Carnival with potato themed games and activities that’s put on by Kids Connection as well as a Potato Decorating contest with cash prizes up for grabs. For some extra fun there will be a giant bubble tower and a “walking on stilts” lesson where people of all ages can learn to walk on stilts. The San Luis Valley Antique Iron Club will be giving rides around the park on a kids train and selling freshly made ice cream all day at the festival.

The famous Downtown Potato Recipe Taste Tour will be going on all day as well. Rides on a horse-drawn wagon will be offered for this event to take participants to and from Chapman Park to Downtown Monte Vista, sponsored by San Luis Valley Federal Bank. The wagon rides are scheduled to give folks time to walk through the participating stores and sample each merchant’s potato dish and then get a ride back to Chapman Park. The public will then vote on the best sweet or savory potato recipe for a winner in each category.

The festival will also be running its annual Field Bus Tour which will leave Chapman Park at 8:30 a.m. This tour will last until about noon, is open to all ages, and is free of charge. To reserve a seat for this tour, call Linda or Racheal at the Potato Committee Office at 719-852-3322.
