ALAMOSA — Oxbow Recreation Area will be the name of Alamosa’s newest — and largest — city park.
After some debate, in a 5-1 vote on August 7 the Alamosa city council approved the Oxbow name for 109 acres of the city’s ranch property.
Prompting the need to give the property a name was the city’s desire to apply for funding for a proposed cross-country course and trails. Great Outdoors Colorado requires grant applications to be in designated parks.
The area currently includes the disc golf course and in the future will encompass trails and cross-country areas developed in conjunction with Adams State.
After opening up the park naming process to the public, the city recreation advisory board narrowed the list of recommended names to six, which Parks Director Heinz Bergann presented to the city council last week. The six finalists were: Cottonwood Park; Endurance Park; Oxbow Recreation Area/Oxbow Park; Quentin Garcia Park; Riverside Park; and Riverside Commons.
