Bert Duane Hansen, long time resident of Las Animas, Colorado passed away suddenly on August 7, 2013 age 77. He was born at Lutheran Hospital in Alamosa, Colorado on November 8, 1935 to Clinton and Bertha Hansen.

Bert was a devoted husband, a loving father and an indulgent grandfather. Throughout his entire life he was an adventurer and lived life to the fullest. He was filled with the traveling bug and often spent many hours driving to spend time with family and to experience the great outdoors through camping, fishing and hunting. This and his love of machinery led him to acquiring an airplane, becoming a pilot and spent much time flying in southern Colorado visiting friends and family. Speaking of machinery, it seemed he was always involved in operation, repair, assembly or disassembly of some type of machine throughout his life; be it car, airplane, tractor or other mechanism associated with the farm life. Not only did he love driving for travel but also spent time in his early days as a stock car driver.

Bert loved people and always went out of his way to help others. He could never drive past a stopped car without offering help. His job as director of Social Services gave him abundant opportunities to assist people who were truly in need. He continued to be of service to others even after he went into business for himself though his abundant open-handedness and kind-hardheartedness.

Bert was an inveterate storyteller with a knack for making any story humorous and given the opportunity he would regale anyone who would listen with hilarious anecdotes from his life and experiences. Animals, cars and relatives were his favorite subjects.

Bert joined the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints in his youth.

Bert grew up in and around Alamosa and spent much of his life with horses and cows. At ages 13 and 14, he and a cowboy trailed over 100 head of cattle from south west of Alamosa up to Del Norte, Colorado. Through this lifelong experience he came to intimately know and understand animals allowing him apply both traditional and uniquely individualized methods to his breaking and raising of horses (some of which were later applied with good effect to children). He was an avid outdoorsman and spent much of his youth hunting and fishing and later became material for some of his best stories. He attended Adams State College where he met his future wife, Mabel Weaver-- married in 1958-- and graduated with a business degree in 1959. He was drafted into the United States Army and served as a clerk for three years being stationed at Ft. Carson, Colorado and in Mannheim, Germany. Right out of the Army he worked with his brother-in-law Dick Weaver building fence near Alamosa for a short time (a very short time!) and then he worked in Colorado Springs as a social worker. He became Director of Social Services for Hot Sulfur Springs in 1964 and for Las Animas in 1966. After 1981 he owned and operated the salvage yard and mechanics business in La Junta for nine years and then moved on to home restoration for five years before joining Mabel at Hansen Realty in 1995 as a real estate broker and gentleman farmer with his own herd of beloved cows.

Bert was preceded in death by his father, Clinton, mother, Bertha and daughter-in-law, Wendy Hansen. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Mabel, children Doris Prokop (husband, Mark) of Los Alamos New Mexico, James Hansen of Las Animas, Colorado and Carl Hansen (Debbie) of Superior, Nebraska; grandchildren Chris Baumgart, Robin Mauck (husband, Jason), Alex Prokop (wife, Sarah), Danielle Prokop, Shanna Mitchell (husband, Nathan), Ray Walters, Derrick Hansen and Dustin Hansen and seven great grandchildren; sisters Doris Orcutt (husband, Bob) and Donna Brunelli (husband, George), brothers Jim Hansen (wife, Nancy) and Gary Hansen (wife, Jan) along with numerous nieces and nephews.
