SLVREC crews protect powerlines

Posted: Tuesday, Jun 25th, 2013

MONTE VISTA — San Luis Valley Rural Electric Cooperative crews are working in conjunction with the West Fork Fire Complex fire suppression team to protect powerline structures and substations. The West Fork Fire Complex includes three separate fires: West Fork, Windy Pass and Papoose Fires. The cooperative has responded as needed to each fire.

SLVREC line crews are ensuring that power lines are de-energized and re-energized as needed to ensure firefighter safety and to aid in suppression efforts. Asplundh Tree Trimming, a contractor working for SLVREC, is also assisting the cooperative in protecting SLVREC’s distribution and transmission resources.

The cooperative will strive to restore power whenever possible to affected areas.

However, power will not be restored when doing so would pose a potential danger to firefighters or create a situation where sparks could be created by powerlines coming in contact with trees. The cooperative has worked to maintain power to water wells needed for firefighting efforts.

Updated information on areas with and without power will be maintained on the cooperative’s web site. Visit www.slvrec.com and click on the link at the top of the

“Breaking News” box to obtain information about SLVREC’s electric system status and

to access links to other agencies and resources involved in this fire.

Because of the fire, SLVREC’s office and field crews are stretched thin. SLVREC has established a 24-hour contact with fire fighting resources and SLVREC’s operations department is working as much as possible to protect SLVREC’s electric system. SLVREC is not able to complete normally scheduled work at this time and asks for customers’ understanding and patience. Members are encouraged to visit the cooperative’s web site for information about power outage areas, links to fire information sites, and fire related news from the cooperative. Please limit non-emergency phone calls to SLVREC.

SLVREC can be reached at 852-3538 or 800-332-7634. Alternatively, member

services can be contacted via email: power@slvrec.com. The cooperative is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday; however, calls are accepted 24/7 by live operators.
