Sheep Creek, Trickle Mountain fires under control

SAGUACHE COUNTY The Sheep Creek Fire in Saguache County is 100 percent controlled, according to a Rio Grande National Forest press release. The fire burns 20 miles northwest of Saguache and occupies a 21 acre area filled with mixed conifer and dead and down trees. There is no visible smoke, no structures are threatened and the fire will continue to be patrolled daily. The fire was first reported on June 20 and started by lightening.

The Trickle Mountain Fire is 100 percent contained, according to the press release. The fire was also reported on June 20 and occupies 277 acres 14 miles northwest of Saguache in an area with Ponderosa Pine. It continues to creep and smolder with interior hot spots and has temporary closure on BLM Road 5525. One Type 2 hand crew is battling the blaze and others are mopping up fire and monitoring the blaze lightening also ignited. Smoke is visible on Highway 114 and in the area.

The Ox Cart Fire continues to burn with no intention of containment, according to the press release. It burns about 150 acres six miles southeast of Poncha Pass. There is currently increased activity on the Ox Cart Fire. The fire is spreading primarily in a northerly direction. The Ox Cart Fire has reached one of the management action points. A 20-person hotshot crew, 20-perosn Type 2 hand crew and light helicopter is on scene. The firefighters are constructing indirect line north of the fire.

There is a temporary area closure from North Decker Creek southeast to Nieland Creek including FSR 980 and 982.

Smoke is clearly visible from both sides of the northern Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
