SAN LUIS VALLEY – Upon completion of a review by the Department of Local Affairs, Alamosa County was awarded $300,000 in grant funds to assist in the creation of the Children’s Advocacy Center of the San Luis Valley (SLV CAC), a multi-disciplinary program for responding to child abuse under local nonprofit Tu Casa, Inc.
Since 2011, Tu Casa and more than 24 community partners throughout the Valley have been raising money for the creation of the SLV CAC. The campaign’s budget is over $855,000. With the addition of the DOLA funds, almost $700,000 has been raised. “These funds ensure that the SLV CAC Program will be a reality for the children of the Valley,” said Tu Casa Executive Director Ashley Riley Lopes.
“Even though our facility is not renovated, our SLV CAC Family Advocate, Forensic Interviewers and Play Therapist have already worked with over 20 families affected by child sexual or physical abuse in the last three months. Referrals have come in from all over the Valley. This is a much-needed resource for our communities.”
Funds will be used to renovate Tu Casa’s existing facility to house the program. This specifically designed, child-friendly environment, will be a place where both the child and his/her non-offending caregivers will be comfortable, safe and cared for, allowing for videoed forensic exams, pediatric Sexual Assault Nurses Exams (SANE) and after care services to all be provided at one local location.
“We are so grateful to all our partners, donors and supporters on the project, most especially Alamosa County and our local DOLA Field Representative Christy Culp, for helping us get these much needed funds,” said Audrey Reich, the SLV CAC Capital Campaign Committee Chair and Tu Casa Board Vice-President. “We encourage you to help us raise the last of the funds needed to bring to completion this campaign and ensure the SLV CAC is fully funded and functional for years, and years to come.”
