ALAMOSA — Alamosa County Sheriff’s Office deputies recently caught an alleged gas thief who had been siphoning gas from Husmann Plumbing vehicles.

According to a press release from the sheriff’s office, Husmann Plumbing employees noticed the gas caps to their service vehicles had been removed and the fuel levels were noticeably low when they came to work on May 10.

Sheriff’s Deputy Jason Chacon took the initial report and with the assistance of Husmann Plumbing video developed descriptions of a suspect vehicle and a suspect. Video allegedly showed a man driving a white Ford Pickup using a siphon hose to fill red 5-gallon cans. He then would just let the rest of the gas run out on the ground.

The sharing of the information and vehicle description paid off when Cpl. Judy Jackson saw the suspect vehicle near highway 160 and Fourth St. A traffic stop was made of the vehicle. Cpl. Jackson and Lieutenant James McCloskey discovered the vehicle and driver matched the video evidence. The back of the vehicle had green siphon hoses and red 5-gallon cans.

The investigation resulted in a confession from James Leland Horton, 50, according to the sheriff’s report. An arrest was made for first-degree criminal trespass and theft.
