Good Morning Everyone,
The Alamosa Senior Center got some bad news this week. The Nutrition Program that serves our lunch will be cutting back to three days a week. Our meals will be served Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The Senior Center will be open for activities on Monday and Tuesday but there will not be a meal served. This will cause a hardship on some of the seniors especially the ones who are on Meals on Wheels.
The Meals on Wheels program is one of the largest care programs for vulnerable seniors in the country. Millions of seniors with a limited income, who are in poor health and who are without regular care from family members, rely on home delivery food programs like Meals on Wheels.
Senior hunger is an important issue. If you know of someone who is on Meals on Wheels in your neighborhood, you might want to look in on them and make sure they are O.K. We will miss all of our seniors who come for lunch on Mondays and Tuesdays and we hope that the shut-down will not last too long.
It seems when money is tight some of the first options on the chopping block are so called extra programs, programs that are worthwhile but not deemed essential by the government. They are wrong! These programs help seniors stay in their homes and lower healthcare costs.
Quote of the week: A hungry man is not a free man!
See you next week
