ALAMOSA — A Texas fugitive who remained on the lam in Alamosa County for the last five months is back in custody, thanks to the combined efforts of local and federal law enforcement agencies.

Alamosa County Sheriff’s Lt. James McCloskey said in a press release that his office, along with the Alamosa Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service, recently tracked down Matthew Alexander McDonald.

The 21-year-old man, who had been hiding out at a residence off Highway 285, is wanted in Texas as a sex offender.

U.S. Marshals initially planned to transfer McDonald back to Texas, but in the meantime, authorities discovered that he allegedly committed a burglary during his stay in Alamosa County.

Sheriff’s deputies say they recovered several guns that McDonald allegedly stole from a county residence. The alleged discovery led them to charge him with second-degree burglary, theft under $20,000, possession of weapons by a previous offender and failure to register as a sex offender.

Once the latest charges are resolved, he will be extradited back to Texas.

According to the Jacksonville Daily Progress newspaper, police in Bullard, Texas, arrested McDonald in December 2011 for the sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl.

Bullard police said that McDonald was on probation out of Missouri when he committed the offense, the newspaper reported.
