April is National STD Awareness Month. According to new data from the CDC, sexually transmitted infections are on the rise in the United States, especially among young people: there are now about 20 million new infections in the United States each year, half in the under 25 age group.
Getting tested for sexually transmitted infections is one of the most important things we can do to protect our health. STIs are widespread, but early treatment can help us live healthy lives by helping avoid some of the negative consequences of STIs.
That’s why Planned Parenthood has joined with MTV, the Kaiser Family Foundation, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in marking STD Awareness Month through the award-winning GYT — Get Yourself Tested — campaign. Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains’ 33 health centers in our four state region offer routine testing for a range of STDs. Last year alone, PPRM provided nearly 15,000 STI tests across Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming and Southern Nevada. In April, the Alamosa health center will offer $10 HIV testing and $10 Chlamydia/gonorrhea testing on April 15 and 17. The health center is located at 1560 12th Street #7.
Getting tested is simply a basic part of staying healthy. People should know that testing is easier than ever before: for example, rapid HIV tests can provide results in as fast as 20 minutes from just a finger prick!
PPRM is proud to be the nonprofit health care provider for more than 120,000 people in the Rocky Mountain region. We work every day to reduce the U.S.’s high rates of STIs through education, testing and treatment, and our doors are open to everyone.
