ALAMOSA—Finishing the 2012-13 season with a 9-17 overall record and a 6-16 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, is not the way Adams State University envisioned this past women’s basketball season to progress. A new face will be on the sidelines for the 2013-14 season, as the university’s athletic department will not renew former Head Coach Kelly Kruger’s contract for the 2013-14 season.

Kruger, who leaves the program after seven seasons, was named to the position in April of 2006. He came to the Grizzlies after a 14-year stint as the head coach of Southwest Minnesota State Lady Mustangs.

In his tenure as Head Coach, Kruger went 96-101 overall (.487), and led the Grizzlies to two NCAA tournaments. The first tournament berth came in 2010 when the Grizzlies went 21-8 (14-5 RMAC). Unfortunately for the Grizzlies, they were ousted in the opening round. They returned to the NCAA tournament a year later in 2011, where they had a school record, 23-10 overall record (15-7 RMAC). They made it to the Regional Championship game but were defeated by Metro State.

The Grizzlies have gone just 16-36 over the past two seasons. Kruger’s squad failed to win back to back conference games this season and finished 3-7 over their final ten contests.

Kruger now owns 420 overall wins in his career.

Adams State University Director of Athletics Larry Mortensen stated, “Adams State appreciates the efforts of Coach Kruger in building the women’s basketball program. There were many accomplishments during his tenure. We wish him well in future endeavors.”

A national search for Adams State University’s next women’s basketball coach will commence immediately.
