MONTE VISTA — A structure fire near Catlin’s Greenhouse Tuesday afternoon destroyed a barn and its contents.

Lori Catlin said the fire occurred about 3:45 p.m. and was a fast fire, fully engulfed in a matter of minutes before the Monte Vista Volunteer Fire Department could even arrive. She said she did everything she could to help put it out such as cutting the electricity and hosing it with water, but it was too late.

Nobody was hurt, but several items of sentimental value and antiques in the barn were lost. For example, a 100 year-old tractor in the old barn was a total loss. The tractor had great sentimental value for the Catlin family.

Inside the barn were all the fiber pots for the greenhouse, saddles and bridles, greenhouse supplies and cardboard boxes for packing.

“I am just now realizing how much and what all was in there,” Catlin said. “The barn was over 100 years old and we had just painted it not long ago. We had once found whiskey bottles in it; some still had whiskey in them, from the prohibition days in the 1800s. I was told that at some point, the building had been an old stagecoach stop.”
