BLANCA—A 6-minute scoring drought in the fourth quarter doomed the Sierra Grande Panthers as the Sanford Indians clinched the Southern Peaks League title with their 44-34 win here at Dunn Gymnasium at Sierra Grande High School on Friday night.
The contest started with the Panthers opening up a 4-point lead, 6-2, before Sanford came charging back and behind four 3-pointers, they took a 14-12 lead into the second quarter.
Once again, that did not faze the Panthers as they came charging back and nabbed their biggest lead of the game of six points, with 3:26 remaining in the second quarter.
The Indians used field goals by Brett Crowther to climb back in and make it a 2-point game going into the break.
The Indians then teed off as they outscored Sierra Grande 17-8. They were able to tie the game at 28 with 4:41. That started a 12-0 run to make the score 37-30 after three quarters.
A bucket by senior Braydon Wakasugi with six minutes remaining was the last bucket they would score until 26 seconds remained. Sanford scored seven points in the final quarter to get the 10-point win.
Sanford was led by senior Dalton Rodriguez, who scored three 3-pointers to lead for 11 points. Freshman Miles Caldon and junior Calder Larsen each scored eight points and Crowther and freshman Chance Canty each scored seven points.
Sierra Grande was led by senior Tomas Vigil and junior Adam Gomez with 12 points and ten points, respectively.
The main key to help the Indians win was the ability to hit 3-pointers as they connected on eight attempts while Sierra Grande was 2-of-18 (10 percent) from beyond the arch. The Panthers were 10-of-30 (33.3 percent) from 2-point land.
Sanford improves to 6-0 in the SPL (13-3 overall) while Sierra Grande falls to 6-2 in the SPL and (12-4 overall). The Indians defeated the Panthers 66-34 earlier.
