Valley’s 2A grapplers travel to Fowler for regionals

FOWLER—The San Luis Valley’s Class 3A Wrestling teams will be taking to the road on Friday to take part in the Class 2A Region 2 tournament at Fowler High School. The teams include, Del Norte, Center, Fowler, Custer County, Rye, John Mall, La Veta, Mountain Valley, Centennial, Sargent and Antonito.

The Del Norte Tigers and the Fowler Grizzlies are the only two teams that are ranked entering the tournament, according to Tim Yount’s On the Mat rankings. The Tigers sit in the sixth slot while Fowler is sitting in the seventh spot.

Interestingly enough, the Tigers and the Vikings clashed in a Southern Peaks League dual last week with the unranked Vikings downing the Tigers.

There are 35 wrestlers in the region who are ranked in the Top 20 including 27 in the Top 10 and 16 from the Valley.

Cameron Ham of Custer County leads the way at 106 pounds as he is ranked third. Scotty Vigil is ranked seventh while Fowler’s Justin Hinkle is ranked tenth.

There is only one wrestler at 113 pounds and that is Brandon Grasmick of Fowler, who is ranked second.

Center’s Jose Angel Chavez, is ranked third, and Rye’s Wesley Camper is ranked 15th, at 120 pounds.

126 pounds is the only weight class with five ranked wrestlers. Noah Trujillo of Antonito leads the way at No. 4 while Center’s Jeremy Moreno is sitting in fifth. John Mall’s John Paul Vigil (seventh), Del Norte’s Robert Gonzales (11th) and Rye’s Jacob Schaffer (13th) were all ranked.

Center’s Gustavo Nungaray, who is ninth, is the only ranked wrestler at 132 pounds. Jeremiah Moreno (sixth) of Center and W.D. Arnold (tenth) of La Veta are the two ranked wrestlers at 138 pounds while Del Norte’s Brennan Pacheco is the only ranked wrestler at 145 pounds as he sits at No. 4.

The Tigers also have the No. 1 spot in the next two weight classes. Shawn Beiriger sits atop the 152 pound rankings while Austin McDonald leads the 160 pounders. Jeremy Burke (third) of Fowler and Wyatt Wommack (tenth) of Custer County are also ranked at 152 pounds while Jacob Pino (11th) of John Mall joins McDonald at 160 pounds.

Tharen Smith of Del Norte is ranked third at 170 pounds while Fowler’s Chance Chambers sits at No. 13.

Centennial’s lone ranked wrestler comes at 182 pounds. Jose Cisneros is ranked at 12th. Luke Holmquist of Fowler and Manny Pedigo of Custer County are ranked eighth and ninth, respectively.

Fowler’s Blaine Larsen (fourth), Center’s Jose Luis Macias (sixth) and Sargent’s Chance Padilla (eighth) are the ranked wrestlers at 195 pounds while, Center’s Luis Mariscal (fifth), Sargent’s Zach Morgan (sixth), Rye’s Matt Stevenson (15th) and La Veta’s Elliott Blessman (17th) are amongst the ranked wrestlers at 220 pounds.

Del Norte’s Shane Shearin, Rye’s Dillon Stinson and John Malls Lorenzo Trujillo are ranked eighth, ninth and tenth at 285 pounds.
