CENTER—The Monte Vista Pirates swept a non-classification clash from the Center Vikings here at Center High School on Tuesday.

The Lady Pirates won 33-23 while the boys’ team won their third straight game 47-28.

The girls’ game was more of a defensive game as both defenses were able to force both teams from scoring a majority of their shots and the Pirates won the game 33-23.

The first quarter of the game started with two field goals by the Pirates to jump out to an early 4-0 lead. They extended their lead to 7-1 on a 3-pointer by senior Ashley Martinez. The Vikings, who had several opportunities to close the gap made a late 6-1 run late in the quarter to take a 2-point deficit into the second quarter, 9-4.

The Vikings were only able to connect on two of their five free throw shots in the quarter but they held the Pirates to just two field goals to tie the game at 13 at the break.

The teams then traded leads in the opening part of the third quarter before the Pirates finally put a run together to take a 4-point lead, 22-18, into the fourth quarter.

Despite a far 3-pointer by Viking senior Alexa Lobato, the foul ratio entering the fourth quarter was 6-1. So with 6:12 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Pirates were in the bonus. In the final six minutes of the game, the Pirates were 3-of-11 from the line while Center missed 17 shots from the field including eight from inside the key. That combination helped Monte Vista ice the 33-23 win.

The Pirates’ high scorer was Alyssia Torres with eight points while Terrise Sanchez scored seven points and Itzel Ortiz scored six. Shelby Hindes and Martinez each scored five points. Jessica Brown tacked on two. As a team they were only able to score on 4-of-15 (27 percent) of their free throws.

The Vikings were led by Lobato who scored 13 points. Maya Martinez scored five points and Megan McKibbon scored four points while Megan Torrez scored one. They connected on 7-of-17 (41 percent) of their free throws.

In the boys’ game the Pirates had little trouble as they just out-rebounded the whole game and used several second-chance points to capture the 47-28 win.

The first quarter saw the two teams fail to score very many points. The Pirates, who took a 4-0 lead early, held the Vikings to zero points in the opening six minutes of the contest. That was not to say they did not have the opportunities because they did. There were several shots that were not put up very hard and clung off the rim or were air balls.

Avel Martinez broke the dry spell with a bucket with 2:01 showing in the quarter that was quickly countered by a deep 3-pointer by Jaziah Martinez to make the score 7-2 entering the second quarter.

The Pirates then put the pedal down as they rushed away with the game. There was just no controlling the deficit from getting into double digits in the second quarter. The Pirates did not let up any in the second half as they continued their dominance. They scored 31 points in the second half.

The leading scorer for the Pirates was Jaziah Martinez with 11 points. Presley Garcia also scored six points.

Center was led by Jordan Garcia with eight points while Servando Moreno had seven.
