Falcons win Tiger Duals Tournament Saturday

CAÑON CITY—The No. 1 ranked team in Class 3A according to Tim Yount’s On The Mat Rankings dominated every dual they participated in on Saturday here in the Tiger Dome at Cañon City to capture the team crown of the Tiger Duals.

Joining the Tigers and Falcons in Saturday’s tournament was Class 2A’s seventh-ranked Fowler, along with 4A teams Vista Ridge and Pueblo East and 2A school John Mall.

The Falcons defeated Fowler, Pueblo East and Cañon City for the title.

Some highly ranked wrestlers that were in action on Saturday, included top-five ranked wrestlers: Fowler’s Brandon Grasmick (second in 113s), Jeremy Burke (third, 152s) and Blaine Larson (fourth, 195s); Centauri’s Ethan Coombs (third, 126s), Jason Buhr (first, 145s), Micah Keys (first, 160s), Jareb Aziz (second, 182s) and Greg Martinez (fifth, 285s, 3A); Pueblo East’s Jacob Robles (fifth, 285s, 4A); and Cañon City’s Garrett Benell (third, 220s).

The Falcons opened up their dual with the Grizzlies down 12-0 after Justin Hinkle claimed a forfeit win at 106 pounds before Garsmick claimed a pin over Dylan Ross in 1:03 in the 113 pound bout.

Centauri quickly battled back and tied the match after Angelo Martinez got six points at 120 pounds with a forfeit before Coombs pinned Drew Corsentino in 3:27 in the 126 pound match.

They then gathered the lead after Christopher Martin pinned Rhett Hinkle in 5:55 in the 132 pound match. Shane Wilson gathered six points with a forfeit at 138 pounds before Buhr got an injury default win over Burke at 145 pounds. Richardson (152 pounds) and Keys (160) both were awarded forfeits before Chance Chambers pinned Jensen Hamilton in 5:27.

Aziz pinned Luke Holmquist in the 182 pound match in 1:11 before Larseon nabbed a 4-2 decision over Tylen Pavlovsky at 195 pounds. RJ Ruybal (220) and Martinez (285) rounded out the dual with forfeit wins.

In the championship dual, the Falcons dominated the Tigers after claiming a 47-30 win at the Palmer Ridge Duals earlier this season.

Scott Ready (106) and Ross (113) each traded forfeits to tie the dual early at 6 before Jake Schipper got a 16-0 technical fall over Martinez in the 120 pound bracket.

At 126 pounds, Coombs pinned Richard Garcia in 3:42 before Frankie Bethune got an 8-6 decision over Martin at 132 pounds.

Wilson nabbed a 7-0 decision over Gavin Guess at 138 pounds while Buhr pinned Antony Kelly in 4:44 in the 145 pound match. Richardson got a pin over Matt Angelo in 1:10 at 152 pounds before Keys pinned Devon Fontenot in 40 seconds at 160 pounds. Hamilton also got a pin in the 170 pound match by pinning Tommy Dexter in 5:06.

At 182 pounds, Jareb Aziz won an 15-7 major decision over Anthony Abbott. Pavlovsky was defeated by Blake Repshire, 6-3 before Garrett Benel pinned Ruybal in 47 seconds. The Falcons ended he tournament on top as Martinez only needed 1:08 to pin Nick Lunder in the 285 pound match.
