Forty Days of Life begins

Posted: Friday, Feb 8th, 2013

ALAMOSA — Forty Days for Life peaceful vigil community outreach, 40 days prayer and fasting for the unborn, will be held from Feb. 13 to March 24 on South Highway 285 in Alamosa near the Planned Parenthood.

Those wishing to register may go 40daysforlife.com/Alamosa or call Jimmy Dittmar at 719-568-1927.

“I think abortion is just something that’s awful,” Dittmar said. “When you have an abortion not only the mother goes through that but the father does too. It may not be right away but months or years later they will think ‘I could have had a baby boy or girl but I chose a different route,’ and that can make you feel guilty.”

After reading Abby Johnson’s “Unplanned,” Dittmar understood more about the subject.

“I would just love to see an end to abortion myself,” he said.

Dittmar said he also could relate to losing a child, as his first wife lost a son in the womb.

“For whatever reason the heart stopped and that was it,” he said. “I can think of the times like ‘today would have been his first day of kindergarten’ or ‘would he have gone to the prom?’ or ‘who would he have married?’ or ‘would he have gotten married?’ ‘would he have gone to college?’ ‘what color of eyes would he have had?’ or color of hair, questions that can’t be answered because I don’t know. Those are painful to think about because it was a life that never was.”

As a college student here Dittmar also volunteered at the Women’s Resource Center where he tried to get some activities going for men.

“I became pro life in my thinking,” he said.

He was able to have a plaque with his son’s name on it, Jimmy Jr., “a life that never was.”
