SAGUACHE — A Saguache Town Board member was charged last week with embezzling money from the town, according to Saguache Undersheriff Tristan Van Zalinge.
Van Zalinge reported Tuesday that Christina Serna, 43, was arrested on charges of embezzling public funds, a Felony 5 offense and false reporting, a misdemeanor. Serna immediately made her $1,000 bond, he said.
Serna is a former Saguache County clerk’s office employee and was one of several candidates who ran for county clerk in 2010. She has served on the Saguache Town Board as a trustee since 2008.
Van Zalinge said that the town noticed the funds were missing during a routine check of finances and allegedly traced the withdrawal to Serna, who was a signee on the town account. When the Saguache Sheriff’s Office was notified, Serna was arrested and a search warrant was executed for her residence.
According to Van Zalinge, several electronic devices were removed from the home. Although nothing was discovered initially on the devices, the investigation is still underway.
The town board will meet at 6 p.m. on Feb. 12 to discuss removing Serna from her position as trustee.
