Costilla Sheriff's Deputy involved in bar brawl

Posted: Tuesday, Jan 29th, 2013

ANTONITO — Costilla County off-duty sheriff deputy Cruz Soto was allegedly involved in a bar fight with James Luhan on Saturday night outside the Dutch Mill in Antonito.

A witness stated that he broke up the brawl after walking outside and witnessing the two men punching each other. The actual reasons behind the fight are unconfirmed; however, rumors are that the two men were fighting over a girl.

The witness contacted the Antonito town police after breaking up the brawl and the police interviewed both the men involved in the fight.

Antonito Chief of Police Margaretta Ortega’s comment on the situation was, “you’re not getting any information out of my department and no comment from me.”

Cruz’s supervisors were unavailable for comment as well. The Costilla County Sheriff is on vacation, and Under Sheriff Adam Chacon was testifying in a trial at the Costilla County courthouse. No charges have not been filed with the district attorney’s office as of yet.

“It was just an average bar fight, no big deal, only one guy got a bloody nose and once I broke up the fight it was over,” said a witness.
