Pete “Speedy” Chavez, 74

Monte Vista resident Pete “Speedy” Chavez, 74, passed away on January 21, 2013 at his home under the constant loving care of his wife Marcella. Pete was born on June 22, 1938 in Westcliff, Colorado, son of Thomas and Cordelia Chavez.

He worked in Agriculture most of his life and also worked at the Fish and Wildlife Refuge. He was extremely friendly to everyone he met and had a good sense of humor. His hobbies included playing guitar, going for rides to the mountains in his jeep, fishing, camping, hunting, gardening, watching western movies, going to the Thunder Valley Speedway, listening to country and Spanish music and was also an avid Denver Broncos fan. Above all he enjoyed the time he spent with his family, especially with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Marcella Chavez of the family home, six sisters, Pauline (Herman) Velasquez of Del Norte, Elaine Franklin of Center, Grace (Wayne) Garcia of Hooper, Georgiana (Jim) Warren of Aurora, Rose (Eloy) Franklin of Pueblo and Judy Archuleta of Pueblo. Four children include Bryan (Leslie) Chavez of Grand Junction, Kevin Chavez of Monte Vista, Sheila (Daniel) Borrego of Belen, New Mexico, and Brandy (Jerome) Archuleta of Monte Vista. Grandchildren include Daniell, Theresa, Brianne, Sunshine, Savanna and Skylar Chavez of Grand Junction, Luke, Jacob and Kaitlyn Chavez of Monte Vista, Matthew, Mikey, Sierra and Noah Borrego of Belen, New Mexico, Felicity, Shanalle, Unica, and Braelyn of Monte Vista, and seven great grandchildren. Also surviving brothers-in-law include Tito Frankin, Leroy ( Eva) Valdez, Sam (Linda) Valdez and Rudy (Kathryn) Valdez. Sisters-in-law include Priscilla Aguirre and Matilda Golden, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Pete was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Evelyn Franklin and Victoria Valdez, one brother Jake Chavez, and four brothers-in-law Eddie Franklin, Sam Valdez, Manuel Archuleta and Rueben Aguirre.

A Vigil Service with Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Sunday, January 27, 2013 at 7:00 P.M. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Monte Vista. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Monday, January 28, 2013 at 10:00 A.M. also at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Viewing will be held on Sunday, January 27, 2013 from 1:00-5:00 P.M. at Rogers Family Mortuary in Monte Vista. Interment will follow the services at Rock Creek Cemetery.
