Letter to the Editor: Valley Humane Society/All 4 Paws saves the day

Posted: Friday, Jan 11th, 2013

In an effort to adopt a puppy I found a breeder that had the large dog I wanted. Filled with excitement I went to get her. Upon my arrival I noticed the dog’s hips were displaced, and her stature was stressed. I asked the breeder about it and she said that she had been in an 8’ X 5’ pen outside for over a month, alone and had not been out so that she may just be “stiff.” After hearing what she said I was appalled that someone could let a huge, growing puppy sit in such a tiny pen in this weather for such an extended amount of time. While stressed about the amount the breeder wanted for her I could not leave her there for another night and knew I would have to take her home. Once I was home she acted as the most well behaved 6-month-old puppy I have ever seen, even after being raised in a barn. She played with all the plush toys around the house as much as her hips would allow. She had an intense need for human love and contact, all she wanted was to please. After sleeping on the idea of not only having to pay for her, but take on the vet bills that would come I was afraid that I would have to take her back to that small, lonely, cold barn after she had a glimpse of the life she could live. My stomach was turning, I felt sick and my hands were shaking. I called All 4 Paws to ask them what could be done. I knew this breeder showed obvious neglect for the dog; there had to be someone who could help.

Marie Claire knows me, as I take my other dogs there for day care; she gave me a contact. I called but not much could be done. I was thinking I would have to return the dog. After speaking with All 4 Paws who is also a part of the Valley Humane Society, they said, “we will not allow her to be taken back to that place.” As we worked together, All 4 Paws/The Valley Humane Society is the reason I was able to save this puppy. She is now in a warm place with other dogs to play with, and all the human love she could ever need. I am in eternal debt to All 4 Paws/The Valley Humane Society. The compassion and love they showed this puppy and me is unforgettable. After seeing how this puppy was treated it was hard to see a light at the end of the tunnel, but All 4 Paws and The Valley Humane Society acted as a guardian angel. So I am asking people in the Valley to please thank All 4 Paws and The Valley Humane Society for being the unseen angels that watch over the neglected animals in the Valley and to donate when you can. This could have been any one of us animal lovers who needed help in a moment’s notice. I deeply thank them for being there for me and this puppy, at the drop of a hat. They were my rock and I thank all the people who helped make a miracle happen for this puppy and for all the other dogs and puppies that have been in need. Thank You, from the absolute bottom of my heart.

Thank you.
