Posted: Thursday, Jan 10th, 2013

SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah — Ardith R Mortensen, 74, passed away on the evening of January 4, 2013 at his home in Saratoga Springs, Utah attended by his wife and surrounded by family.

Early in the morning of September 7, 1938, Grant Curtis Mortensen and Annie Louise Crowther Mortensen were surprised with twin boys. Ardith R Mortensen (Art) was the second baby boy born, following Arnold T Mortensen, joining the family after brothers Curtis and Larry. Four more brothers were born to the parents: Dennis, William (Bill), Carl, and Morton Lars. They were raised on the family ranch in Sanford, Colorado where Ardith learned the value of hard work and loving family relationships. His interests included sports, leatherworking, collecting coins, attending plays, going on drives, playing with children, and in his younger years, teasing his brothers. On March 21, 1957 at the Mesa, AZ LDS Temple, he married his first wife, Cherie Owenna Vance, in a double ceremony with his twin brother and his sweetheart, Alice Rae Hutchins. Together Art and Cherie had four children: Richard, Eric, Debra, and Tamera.

While attending college, he worked on the railroad. He graduated from Adams State College with a Bachelors of Science degree in math and a minor in science. He moved his family to Farmington, New Mexico where he taught high school, later moving to Shiprock, NM. The San Luis Valley was always where he felt at home though, and he moved his family back to Sanford to start Mortensen Farms trucking company with his brother Bill.

On December 16, 1982, Ardith married Colleen Rasmussen, later they were sealed in the Denver, Colorado Temple. To his great joy, he became a father to her five daughters: Angie, JoAnn, Aimee, Lisa and Lori. Though he was no longer a business partner with his brother, he continued his trucking business. By the end of his career, he logged more than four million miles behind the wheel without an accident, and was able to help many he crossed paths with along the way. He was caring to all he met and developed friendships easily.

He is survived by his loving wife, Colleen, his nine children; Richard (Canda) Mortensen, Eric Mortensen, Debra (Tim) King , Tamera (Stewart) Smith, Angie Loven, JoAnn (Anthony) Bagwell , Aimee (Chris) Francom , Lisa (Matt) Bettridge , Lori (Brad) Sanderson , twenty-six grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and his six brothers; Larry (Shelly) Mortensen, Arnold (Alice Rae) Mortensen, Bill (Julie) Mortensen, Dennis (Barbara) Mortensen , Carl (Carlene) Mortensen, Lars (Valorie) Mortensen.

His parents, his oldest brother and one grandson preceded him in death.

Ardith was a loving husband and father, generous friend and caring neighbor. We will miss his keen sense of humor.

A viewing will be held in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ meetinghouse on Friday, January 11, 2013 from 4-6 p.m. in Sanford. At the same location, another viewing will be at 9 a.m. the next day with the funeral being held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 12, 2013. He will be laid to rest in the Sanford Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please make a contribution in his name to the American Cancer Society or you favorite charity.
