ALAMOSA — In line with its strategic plan set in motion last summer, the Adams State University (ASU) Foundation is continuing to work towards its 2016 deadlines with focus as of late on the university’s vision and mission statements.
During the ASU Board of Trustees Friday, Dec. 14 meeting, ASU President David Svaldi reported an all-day foundation retreat in 2012 resulted in six hours of mission and vision statement discussion.
Today, the university’s mission statement is, “Adams State University dedicates its resources to provide opportunity and access for all students. The University is an innovative leader that recognizes the inherent educational value of diversity. It is a catalyst for the educational, cultural and economic interests of rural Colorado, the surrounding region and the global community” and its vision statement, “Building opportunities for everyone to learn and succeed.”
Faculty Trustee Carol Guerrero-Murphy, Ph.D. said the mission statement should stand out to audiences that “don’t know who we (ASU) are.” She added that the word “inclusion” might have a place in the mission statement.
“Inclusion says everybody is welcome and a part of the conversation,” Guerrero-Murphy said.
Svaldi said the present mission statement doesn’t “reflect what we (ASU) are and what we (ASU) do.”
Trustee Val Vigil agreed, and added, “The mission statement should answer one question. Why go to ASU?”
Student Trustee Meagan Smith, originally from Chicago, Ill., said one reason she considered ASU was its mission statement, specifically the word “diversity.”
Vigil recommended keeping a strong connection between the university and the community in the mission statement because students coming to Alamosa are a part of the community.
“Our role in the community is somewhat unique,” said Vice Chair Mary Griffin. “The community and Adams are hand in hand.”
Guerrero-Murphy added, “What more can we do to become the first choice? We could become that.”
Svaldi said the foundation would continue to develop the vision and mission statements and ask for the board’s input before adopting permanent changes.
