ALAMOSA — Alamosa City Manager Nathan Cherpeski will be leaving Alamosa to take the position of city manager for Klamath Falls, Oregon.

Cherpeski announced yesterday he had been offered the position, for which he interviewed among the top three finalists last week.

His first day in Klamath Falls, a city of just under 21,000, will be the first part of February.

“I do have mixed emotions,” Cherpeski said Monday afternoon. “I have really grown to enjoy Alamosa.”

Cherpeski said one of the main reasons for applying for the Klamath Falls position was to be closer to family, “five hours compared to 17.” His and his wife’s families are both on the West Coast.

He said he also looks forward to the opportunity of working in a larger city.

“It’s an opportunity to take the reigns of a larger organization,” he said. “They have challenges like any town does and some good opportunities to work on, so I think that’s exciting.”

Cherpeski’s wife and children will remain in Alamosa until the end of the school year. Their oldest is in high school, and their youngest was born during their stay in Alamosa, which has been six years.

After moving to Alamosa Cherpeski discovered he had roots to the city. His great grandfather was the roadmaster for the railroad here in the 1920’s.

“Alamosa’s been a great place,” Cherpeski said. “I really think there’s a lot going here.”

He said the Alamosa city council will begin discussions during its next meeting on December 19 about how to fill the vacancy.

“I certainly will miss Alamosa,” Cherpeski concluded. “It’s a great town. There’s still a lot of exciting things happening here. I think the community is poised to do great things in the future.”
