Movin' on with Nellie: December is Be Kind Month

Posted: Friday, Dec 7th, 2012

Okay. So I made up this December maxim. Nevertheless, it behooves us to be kind as citizens of the world and most especially because we are voting citizens of the United States of America—leader of the world.

Kindness begins at home and in our small community. We can be kind to others, to ourselves and to the feral population of cats and dogs by making sure our own cats and dogs are spayed and neutered. It is so important that we not be overrun with rejected and loose feral pets else it may look something like the movie: I am Legend (2007).

By inoculating against rabies, Canine Parvovirus, and other transmitted diseases in our pets and by preventing unwanted pregnancies in our pets; we are protecting our pets, each other and our community. How does this really protect our community, you ask?

The protection begins when our pet is protected against rabies even if it is exposed in the morning run along the Rio Grande.

Come to think of it, it would be great if we could have an inoculation against “meanness” as well; malice that runs amuck in our educational institutions, non-profit organizations and for-profit businesses. Bullying in the classroom and out on the playground is just a mirror of what the adults are allowing in their work environments.

If you think about it for a moment, the bully attitude begins with the adults, not the children. The children, a blank slate (a tabla rasa) as noted in psychological and philosophical journals, do not own the notion of mean-ness in a thoughtful and scripted mode.

Bullies are encouraged in our workplace as Gary and Ruth Namie expose in their book: The Bully-free Workplace. And the reader of this column may very well have encountered bullies there, right here in the San Luis Valley.

We should inoculate our society, however sparsely populated, against bullies in the workplace. There are movements afoot to do just that. For instance, the Healthy Workplace Bill (http://www.healthyworkplacebill.org/) offers those in the U.S. an opportunity to learn and unite against the monstrosity of power running over others.

In what we think of as a civilized society, there is no place for Neanderthal Man attitudes like bullying. We must stop the boss, the college or early childhood education center that are schoolyard bullies. We must not let others be bullied. We must inoculate and provide intervention so that all workers, all employees can enjoy the pursuit of life, liberty and happiness.

If we protect others and ourselves against being bullied and bullying, we make steps upward toward the All-Loving, All Knowing.

We must be kind in an active way by assuring a community free of rabies and Parvo in our pets, and mean bullies (aka hostile work environments) in our workplace.

We must else we will regress to Neanderthal times, some 30,000 years ago; and, God forbid, we may inhabit a world like in the movie: I am Legend.
