Alamosa senior Kole Kelley poses with his mom, Nikol, after being awarded as the recipient of the Adrian Gutierrez Courageous Spirit Award. Kelley suffered two injuries this year and according to a script by his journalism teacher Jerry Reed, "One required crutches and extra care for his knee... During the same season, Kole got his bell rung, he was 'rocked' on a pass reception." Another way that Kelley stood up was after he lost his father, Mike, to cancer. According to Reed, "Kole and the rest of his brothers stepped up and though hurting themselves, reflected the depth of character that would make their father proud." This was the last time the Adrian Gutierrez Courageous Spirit Award will be awarded as the All-Valley Football committee believed they honored the young man and they believed some people in the Monte Vista community would not have to deal with the pain anymore.
