Colorado Farm Bureau President Don Shawcroft, left, awards a trip to Nashville to James Henderson, winner of the Young Farmer and Rancher Discussion Meet. Henderson will now go to the national competition in Tennessee.

CONEJOS COUNTY — Conejos County rancher James Henderson won the Colorado Farm Bureau Young Farmer and Rancher Discussion Meet last week in Denver. He will now represent Colorado at the national competition in Nashville, Tenn. in January.

Several farmers and ranchers ages 18 to 35 from the San Luis Valley joined contestants from all over the state in the competition, which is designed to develop the speaking skills necessary to conduct effective board meetings and assume leadership roles within their communities. Contestants are given a prompt such as, “Certain sectors of agriculture are labor intensive and rely heavily on immigrant workers. What is a fair and balanced immigration policy?” They are then given 25 minutes to discuss the topic in front of an audience and are judged on cooperative speaking, problem solving and implementation, delivery and analysis of the issue.

The annual contest is hosted by the Colorado Farm Bureau and is open to all young farmers and ranchers. A collegiate level Discussion Meet is also held concurrently, with scholarship prizes available. For more information on the Discussion Meet and other events available for young farmers and ranchers, contact Lori at LKester@colofb.com.
