MONTE VISTA — Homelake resident Maria Dolores Trujillo, 90, passed away on September 7, 2012 at the Rio Grande County Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Maria was born on March 4, 1922 in Trujillo, the daughter of Alfredo Martinez and Aurelia Lucero Martinez. She was a pioneering ranching woman, granddaughter of Jesus Maria Lucero, who claimed and settled land in the Trujillo area through the Congressional Homestead Act of May 20, 1862. Maria received her education through the Archuleta County School District. Maria married Epifanio Reynaldo Trujillo on November 19, 1945 in Pagosa Springs. On November 19, 2010 they renewed their wedding vows on their 65th wedding anniversary in a private ceremony at home. Maria resided in Trujillo until 1981 when she and her husband moved to Monte Vista to be closer to their children who were living in the San Luis Valley. With a decline in her health, she chose to move to Homelake Veteran’s Center in 2010 where she resided until her passing. Maria was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister who enjoyed crocheting, sewing, reading, gardening, watching I Love Lucy, The Golden Girls, Little House on the Prairie and above all the time she spent with her loving family and friends. Survivors include daughters Celina Andrea Espinoza of Manassa; Gloria Elena (Tomas) Lopez, Pojoaque, N.M.; sons Benjamin Donald Trujillo, Monte Vista; Joseph Alfred Trujillo, Pagosa Springs; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister Esther (Jose) Gallegos, Lathrop; brother Manuel Lino (Graciella) Martinez, Lathrop. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Maria was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Eduvijen Martinez-Villareal, Natividad Martinez, one brother Alfredo R. Martinez, son-in-law Dr. Michael P. Espionza, one grandson Bryan Edward and one infant son Epifanio Pedro Trujillo.
Cremation was chosen and a vigil service with the recitation of the Rosary will be held on Friday, November 30 at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Parish in Monte Vista. Mass of the Resurrection will be held in Monte Vista on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Parish in Monte Vista. Visitation and viewing will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Romero Funeral Home of Monte Vista who is in care of the arrangements.
