ALAMOSA — Plans are being made now for the 22nd Annual Free Community Christmas Dinner, which is open to everyone in the San Luis Valley and beyond.
Founder Ann Waters had a simple idea—”don’t be alone on Christmas,” come join others for a cheerful, full turkey dinner.
This festive event will be held on Christmas Day at the American Legion hall located at 514 4th Street in Alamosa, with a full turkey dinner served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be music, and Santa will have a present for all young children.
This non-denominational celebration exists only because of the generous donations of food, funds and volunteers’ time and dedication, from kind folks all over the San Luis Valley. Once again, the steering committee is requesting donations to present the dinner.
To donate food in any quantity, please call Margy Robertson at 852-3735, or Diana Hamilton at 274-5998. Needs include: 7 cases large #10 cans (if possible) of green beans, 3 cases of cranberry, 8 cases of sweet potatoes, 6 cases of chicken broth, 14 gallons of milk, 14 pounds of butter, 15 pounds of margarine, 1000 margarine cups for rolls, 1 ? cases of canned whipped cream, 1 large can of coffee. For desserts, cookies, cakes and pies are most welcomed.
Because of scheduling, donations of food need to be made by December 17, and can be delivered to the Alamosa Welcome Center, by the railroad station.
The committee is planning for 1400-1500 dinners again, and purchases some foods (turkeys, stuffing, gravy, etc.), plus non-food items, so donations of funds are greatly needed, in any amount. Donors can contact Margy, 852-3735; Pat Lucero, 937-1575; Rick Esquibel, 588-4717, Sandra Hostetter, 580-7184, or Dale Becker, 850-1198. Checks can be written to Free Community Christmas Dinner, P.O. Box 1981, Alamosa 81101.
Because this dinner is served instead of having a buffet line, many volunteers are needed to offer an hour or two of time. There are many jobs, each is important, and scheduling must be completed before Christmas Day; to volunteer, please call Rick at 588-4717, or Margy at 852-3735.
To receive a homebound dinner, call ahead of time to Donna Ditmore at 589-5952 or 580-9078.
All these years, Ann’s great event has been a delightful success, and the group continues even after her passing. With much help from the San Luis Valley community, the committee hopes this 22nd year will be just as wonderful. Thanks in advance to all those who are so willing to offer food, funds and time, and please call soon as possible.
