Sermon: The external purpose of baptism

Posted: Friday, Nov 9th, 2012

The Bible has accounts of thousands of men and women who after hearing the Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ chose to become obedient to that Gospel and were baptized according to the scriptures (Acts 2:4; 2:38; 6:7; 8:6-12.) These men and women were immersed in obedience to the command of Christ for the remission of their sins.

1. Obedience to the Gospel

The Gospel is the account of the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to forgive our sins and give us hope and eternal life (I Corinthians 15:1-4.) This absolute truth is told to us in the Bible which is the inspired word of God. Unless one obeys the Gospel, he or she cannot be saved (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9; 1 Peter 4:17.) When baptized we are buried with Christ into his death and raised from the waters of baptism into a new life (2 Corinthians 5:17; Romans 6:4; Colossians 2:12.) This then is immersion into the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus in order to be SAVED.

2. Remission of Sins

When one is immersed in baptism with Jesus in obedience to the Gospel, the blood of Jesus shed on the cross covers those sins and he or she receives forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38) as his/her sins are washed away (Acts 22:16.) God then adds the obedient immersed believer to his family, the church, which is made of people who are in a covenant relationship with him (Acts 2:4.)

Jesus is the Savior of the world (I John 4:14.) Jesus is the Son of God (Matthew 16:16.0 Jesus is Lord (Philippians 2:10-11.) The coming of Jesus was prophesied for centuries (Acts 8:35.) Jesus came at the right time as prophesied (Romans 5:6-8.) We all have sinned (Romans 3:23.) The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23.) No one can be saved unless he is born again (John 3:3.) We can know we are saved (2 Corinthians 13:5.) The Gospel saves (Romans 1:16.) Hear Jesus words (Matthew 7:24; Romans 10:17.) Have faith (Hebrews 11:6.) Repent of sins (Acts 2:38.) Confess Christ (Matthew 10:32.) Be baptized (Mark 16:15-16.) Live faithfully (1 Corinthians 15:58.)

May God bless your life

In Christís live
