VALLEY — Republican Larry Crowder, 63, will serve as the first state senator for the newly formed Senate District 35.

Crowder was the apparent winner late Tuesday night in a close race with Democratic opponent Crestina Martinez. Both are San Luis Valley residents.

In a statement from Crowder’s campaign Tuesday night, he said it was a hard pressed battle, and he looks forward to serving southern Colorado as its state senator.

The new Senate District 35 is comprised of 16 counties in southern Colorado including the Valley counties of Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Mineral, Rio Grande and Saguache, plus Baca, Bent, Crowley, Custer, Huerfano, Kiowa, Las Animas, Otero, Prowers and Pueblo.

Crowder is a fifth generation Coloradoan with strong connections to all areas of the new senate district. He was born and raised in Otero County and graduated from Manzanola High School in 1966.

He served in the U.S. Army and is a Vietnam veteran. He currently serves as the Rio Grande County Veteran Service Officer and belongs to the American Legion-Alamosa and the Disabled American Veterans-La Jara.

He had stated some of the most important issues to him were veterans’ issues, education and the elderly.

As a cattleman and farmer, agricultural issues are also an important focus for Crowder. Crowder has served in the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association and was a member of the San Luis Canal board in the 1980’s.

Other organizations with which he has served include the South Central Workforce Board which he chaired (2000-2010); Alamosa County GOP, which he also chaired (2004-2010); the 12th Judicial GOP, which he chaired (2004-2010); and Trinity Lutheran Church treasurer (2006-2008.)

He has served as chairman of the Alamosa County Land Use Board since 2004 and sits on the Colorado Draft Board.

Crowder and his wife of nearly 41 years, Cheri, have two grown sons and four grandchildren.
