ALAMOSA — A fire engulfing a barn full of hay lit the night sky Sunday evening near Alamosa.

An old wooden barn containing 400 bales of hay caught fire about 5:30 p.m. Sunday evening at 2716 Road 3 South on property belonging to Aaron Christensen. Alamosa Volunteer Fire Department firefighters with the assistance of the Monte Vista Volunteer Fire Department worked to keep the blaze from spreading Sunday night.

“It was an old wooden barn so it burned pretty fast,” said Alamosa Fire Chief Don Chapman. He said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Chief Chapman said the hay and barn were a total loss, and the fire destroyed some lumber and tools, but no livestock were lost in the fire.

He added that there was some minor heat damage to other buildings.

Firefighters were on the scene about four hours Sunday evening, according to Chapman, and had to return on Monday for about two more hours because the fire in the hay pile had rekindled.
