DEL NORTE — With two San Luis Valley school districts having ballot issues named the same, it seems some voters here are confused as to just what their local school district is requesting.
Rio Grande County Ballot Issue No. 3A asks if the Del Norte Consolidated School District can increase taxes $832,600 in 2012, with collections in 2013, to offset revenue shortfalls.
In Alamosa, that district’s 3A ballot issue seeks a tax extension to build agriculture/vocational facilities and a new sports stadium with an eight-lane, synthetic track.
The Del Norte school’s bond issue seeks general funds to restore critical budget cuts, mitigate future cuts, purchase textbooks, computers and other resources, support programs to prepare students for the future, enhance safety and security of students, staff and school property, and maintain competitive salary and benefit levels to retain and attract high quality teachers.
The proposed tax increase would result in an additional property tax mill levy in excess of the levy authorized for the district’s general fund.
