Posted: Thursday, Oct 11th, 2012

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — James Lyle “Jim” Dobey, 76, was born August 1, 1936 in Monte Vista, Colo. to Austin and Edna Davis Dobey.

He grew up in the Sargent Community, a farming area, north of Monte Vista and was graduated from Sargent High School in 1954. He was active in the Sargent Community Church and youth group. Due to his asthma, he was not physically able to participate in sports; however, he served as statistician and manager for football and basketball all his high school years.

He then attended Adams State College, now Adams State University, and, during this time he worked for The Valley Courier and continued his interest in following the San Luis Valley Schools’ sporting events. He was graduated from Adams State in 1960.

He married Donna Ludwig of Ralston, Neb., on Dec. 4 1960. They tried life on the road for the San Luis Valley Potato Administrative Committee. They then moved to Calif. with their first child, Jesse (nee Lisa) in 1962. After a brief stint in law school, he began his career in the financial field at Security Pacific Bank. He then worked for the brokerage firm of Roberts, Scott & Co. then First Affiliated Securities, Inc. and finally at Jack White & Co. until retirement.

Jim had two passions in life besides his work and family—watching football and square dancing. He was a loving husband and father, a hard worker and jovial fellow, always quick with the quips and amusing stories that kept his friends and family in good spirits.

He died quietly on September 29, 2012 at Kindred Hospital in San Diego losing his fight with pneumonia. He had been hospitalized several times since returning to California after the death of his second wife, Lois Kiley Dobey in Jan. 2012.

A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, 2012 at Flinn Springs County Park just east of San Diego, Calif. He chose cremation and his ashes scattered over the ocean. The Neptune Society is in charge.

Jim is survived by his children Jesse Braxton, Michael Dobey, Amy (Mike) Faust, Raleigh, NC, Daniel Dobey, San Diego, Calif.; grandchildren Dylan and Dalton Dobey, and Amelia, Koen, Peter and Liesl Faust; a brother, Glenn Roy Dobey, Farmington, NM and his first wife.
