Valley ACT scores drop in 2012

Courier staff writer

VALLEY — Only two of the 14 Valley school districts improved their American College Testing (ACT) scores in 2012.

The Center Consolidated School District and the Sierra Grande School District saw a slight increase in scores from 2011 to 2012. Center's average composite score - the combination of scores in English, math, reading and science – increased from 15.9 to 16.1 and Sierra Grande's increased from 16.4 to 18 out of a possible 36. Accurate data was not available for five school districts – Centennial, Creede, Mountain Valley, Sanford and South Conejos – because less than 16 students participated in ACT testing in either 2011, 2012 or both. The remaining eight districts saw decreases in their average composite scores from 2011 to 2012.

In 2012, the highest composite scoring Valley school districts were North Conejos and Sangre de Cristo at 19. In 2011, North Conejos scored the same and Sangre de Cristo scored .6 points higher.

The lowest scoring Valley school district in 2012 was Centennial with an average composite score of 15.1. Data was not available for 2011.

Colorado’s high school juniors performed roughly the same this past spring on the college entrance exams as they did in spring 2011, with slight dips in math and science offset by slight increases in reading and English, according to Ed News Colorado. The state’s highest-performing school was Liberty Common Charter School in Fort Collins, with a composite score of 27.5.

Colorado's composite score was 20.6 compared to the national mark of 21.1, according to the state data resource. The national figure has stayed the same for last five years.

In English, Colorado averaged 19.9 and the nation 20.5. In math, Colorado averaged 20.5 and the nation 21.1. In reading, Colorado averaged 20.7 and the nation 21.3. Lastly, in science, Colorado averaged 20.8 and the nation 20.9.

Colorado mandates all high school juniors to take the ACT test in the spring. The scores are factored into the state rating system for district and school accountability. Most states do not make the test a requirement and many students take the test during the fall of their senior year to meet college application prerequisites. According to Ed News Colorado, nationwide, 52 percent of 2012 graduates took the ACT, up from 43 percent in 2008. The test is most popular in the Midwest, mountain states and the South. Fewer than 40 percent of students on the West Coast and in the Northeast take the test.

In Colorado, based on the test, 62 percent of students met college readiness benchmarks in English compared to 67 percent of students in the nation; 41 percent met the benchmarks in math compared to 46 percent and 47 percent in reading compared to 52 percent, according to the state data resource. In science, Colorado was on par with the national percentage at 31 percent.
