VALLEY — Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet on Wednesday announced that Colorado State University’s San Luis Valley Research Center has won a $168,040 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for potato research. The grant will be used to support the university’s agricultural research efforts in the San Luis Valley.
“Colorado State University is a leader in agricultural research, helping farmers and ranchers in Colorado continue to grow their operations,” Bennet said. “This grant will help CSU continue its research, which includes finding ways to produce potatoes that are more resilient to weather and pests and more appealing to consumers. The research will make Colorado’s potato farmers more competitive and help support the local economy in the San Luis Valley.”
The San Luis Valley Research Center is one of eight off-campus centers of the Colorado Agricultural Experiment Station system and is designed to meet the needs of the San Luis Valley agricultural community and the many affiliated industries that comprise the agricultural production and marketing system in the area.
