ALAMOSA— With less then a month of summer vacation, the boys of summer baseball are enjoying their last games as the 2010 San Luis Valley Boys’ 10-12 Baseball champion will be crowned on Saturday at Lee Field here in Alamosa.

The 10-team tournament started on Tuesday night with eight of the ten teams competing in quarterfinal games around the Valley.

Center entered the tournament as the number one seed as they had a 12-0 record through out the season. The number two seed in the tournament was one of four Alamosa’s teams, the second seed was the one coached by John White. They entered with an 8-4 record. Because these two were the top two seeds they earned automatically advanced to the next round of the tournament.

The third seeded team, which entered with a 7-3-2 record, was Sargent’s first team, they faced Monte Vista’s team coached by Roger Salazar. The Monte Vista team, which had a record of 5-7, was the sixth seed because of a tiebreaker in which they defeated the seventh seed on June 24. In Tuesday’s game at Sargent High School, Sargent won to move on to Saturday’s semifinals game.

The fourth seed was Sargent’s second team that finished the regular season with a 7-5 record and they faced the Alamosa team coached by Peter DeLaCerda, which entered the tournament 6-5-1 to be the fifth seed. Tuesday the Alamosa squad won 10-4 to advance to Saturday’s semifinal game.

Also on Tuesday, the seventh seed, Monte Vista’s team coached by Ray Martinez entered with a 5-7 record to face Del Norte’s team coached by John Medina. Del Norte was the tenth seed and entered the tournament with a 2-9-1 record. Monte Vista advanced to take on Alamosa’s John White team on Thursday.

Thursday’s game was an exciting one as the two teams battled but eventually Monte Vista came out with the victory and they will face Sargent on Saturday.

The final game played on Tuesday was between Alamosa’s team coached by Chris Crowther and Alamosa’s team coached by Jeron Parkins. The two teams entered the tournament as the eighth and ninth seeds, respectively. Parkins’ team, which had a record of 2-9-1, upset Crowther’s team, which had a 4-7-1 record. Parkins’ team advanced to play Center on Thursday night.

Center continued its dominance on Thursday as they defeated Parkins’ team and moves to the semifinals against the Alamosa squad coached by Peter DeLaCerda. This game is set to start at 9 a.m. on Lee Field 1 with the winner vying for the championship at 11 a.m.
