ALAMOSA — Art lovers are in for a treat as once again mother and daughter Phoebe and Jocelyn Russell share their work during their annual exhibit, scheduled this year for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 20-22, at the Inn of the Rio Grande in Alamosa.
The opening reception will be held from 4-9 p.m. Friday, with show hours on Saturday from 12-7 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Phoebe Russell concentrates on watercolor painting and will unveil some never-before-seen work as well as some new pieces. The watercolors will range from scenics and portraits to abstracts.
“I have been a painter a long time,” Phoebe said. She has also lived in the San Luis Valley for a long time, having moved here in 1937 from eastern Colorado. She lived in the Bowen and Waverly areas.
Incidentally, Phoebe will celebrate a milestone birthday on Friday, the day of the art show opening reception.
It was Phoebe’s love of art that inspired her daughter Jocelyn at a young age to become interested in painting, clay, yarn or whatever other medium Phoebe was working in at the time. “She had color books, but she had the real thing as well,” Phoebe said.
Jocelyn is a San Luis Valley original who now lives on San Juan Island across from Anacortes, Washington.
Jocelyn has become well known for her bronzes and will display several pieces in the show this weekend including a maquette (small model) of a bobcat that will be featured along the Arkansas River Walk in Tulsa, Okla. The river walk already features two of her pieces, an elk and wolves, as well as bronzes by Alamosa artist Jim Gilmore.
