ALAMOSA — The Adams State Men’s soccer team has been thoroughly preparing for their home opener against Eastern New Mexico State this weekend. The inaugural season for the Grizzlies was full of trials as the team finished with a disappointing record of 0-10-3 in 2009. Because of this, the team hasn’t received much love in the pre-season, as they were picked to finish 9th out of 9 teams in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. But in the past two weeks, the team has been preparing for its home opener with multiple practices and scrimmages in order to build team chemistry going into this year. The team is relatively young compared to its RMAC counterparts, as 24 of the 35 players on this year’s squad are freshmen. Conversely, Eastern New Mexico will prove do be a challenge for the Grizzlies this weekend, at least in the experience department, with a roster that boasts eight seniors. Despite the relative youth and inexperience of the team, their four international players should bolster the Grizzlies, Bruno Falcao and Diego Santos, and Joaquim Resende of Brazil, Beverly Hottor of Ghana, and Joesph Jallow of Gambia. Another bright spot on this years roster will be returning junior Peter Freeman, who was the Grizzlies’ second leader in points last year with three goals and one assist. Fans of Alamosa High School should also be happy to see former Mean Moose goalie Paul Pizza on the roster as one of two freshman goalkeepers this year. The Grizzlies will also be entering their first season under head coach Tim Busen, hired just this April. The role of head coach for a Division II men’s team will definitely be different for Busen, as his previous college coaching experience was head coaching the Michigan State club team and as an assistant women’s coach for Division III Olivet College (Mich.) However, Busen seems to be the right kind of coach the Grizzlies are looking for, seemingly possessing a Midas touch, as he had previously turned around numerous soccer programs while he was in Michigan. At Perry High School (Mich.), his most recent coaching job prior to being hired on at Adams State, he was the catalyst in changing the 2-16 girls soccer team into a team that finished second in their league with a record of 15-3-1. Similarly, during his tenure at Olivet, he helped turn around a team that had a 3-16 record into a team with a 15-3 record. One reason for Busen’s success may be the importance he places on team building. This summer, coach Bussey climbed Blanca Peak, with two of the Grizzlies soccer upperclassmen: Beverly Hottor and Bruno Falcao. Climbing a mountain with players isn’t something most coaches would do, which shows the confidence Busen has with his team. Additionally, the addition of 24 freshmen may put a scare in some fans, but doing this shows that Busen is also willing to build a corps of players who will know each well on and off the field for the next four years. Eastern New Mexico should prove to be a formidable foe for the Grizzlies with the Greyhounds having beaten the Grizzlies twice last season including a 5-1 drubbing in Portales, N.M. and a 3-0 shutout at home. Eastern New Mexico won’t be the only challenging opponent the Grizzlies will face this season as they will face a number of RMAC opponents who beat them last year, including Fort Lewis, who won last year’s NCAA DII men’s soccer National Championship. But supporters of Grizzlies men’s soccer should not be discouraged, because with the influx of young talent under the strong leadership of coach Busen, things are definitely looking up for Adams State this season. Fans of the Grizzlies can catch the men’s soccer home opener tomorrow, 12:30 p.m. at Murphy Field. The ASC women’s soccer team will follow with a game against in-state rivals CSU-Pueblo at 3 p.m.
