Sunny disposition

Posted: Friday, Aug 2nd, 2013

Trinchera Ranch is helping both the soil and the community with its first sunflower crop on Highway 149. The Costilla County Biodiesel Plant will turn the cropís seed into fuel, and the remaining residue will feed grazing elk this winter. The sunflowers are intercropped with clover and radish to nourish the soil in the midst of a barley rotation, also adding additional forage for the big game. Right, giant bumblebees explore the ripening sunflower heads while earthworms and insects roam below in the chemical free agricultural landscape.
