City recognizes value of speech, hearing

Posted: Thursday, May 9th, 2013

Celebrating May as Better Hearing and Speech Month are from left in front Audiologist Linda Vaughan, Alamosa Mayor Kathy Rogers and Speech Pathologist Patricia Miller. Vaughan and Miller work for SLV Regional Medical Center Physician Services. From left in back are Alamosa City Councilors Rusty Johnson, Josef Lucero, Greg Gillaspie, Leland Romero and Charles Griego. The mayor and council proclaimed May as Better Hearing and Speech Month during the councilís May 1st meeting to salute the local audiologists and speech-language pathologists who work to bring better hearing and speech to individuals affected by communication disorders. An estimated 42 million Americans, or 1 in 10 families, have some type of communication disorder. Vaughan and Miller said they want to help bring awareness to the importance of speech and hearing, which many people take for granted, yet pose a daily struggle for Valley residents of all ages who suffer from communication disorders.
