Troop 307, Alamosa Library celebrate Boy Scout Week

Posted: Wednesday, Feb 6th, 2013

Boy Scouts commemorate the 103rd anniversary of Boy Scouts in the Alamosa Public Library.

ALAMOSA — Some 20 Boy Scouts and adult leaders spent Friday evening (February 1) and all night locked in the Alamosa Public Library in celebration of the start of the 103rd anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America.

This annual celebration called Scout Week began in 1919 when President Woodrow Wilson issued a Scout Week proclamation saying, “The Boy Scouts have not only demonstrated their worth to the Nation, but have also materially contributed to a deeper appreciation by the American people of the higher conception of patriotism and good citizenship.”

The proclamation went on to say, “I earnestly recommend that, in every community, a Citizens’ Committee, under the leadership of a National Citizens’ Committee, be organized to cooperate in carrying out a program for a definite recognition of the effective services rendered by the Boy Scouts of America: for a survey of the facts relating to the boyhood of each community, in order that with the cooperation of churches, schools and other organizations definitely engaged in work for boys, adequate provision may be made for extending the Boy Scout program to a larger proportion of American boyhood.”

In addition to snacks, the Scouts enjoyed:

* A night of movies featuring Boy Scouts:

* Follow Me Boys, staring Fred MacMurray

* Scout Camp

* Mr. Scoutmaster, staring Clifton Webb

* A few scary stories from the outdoors, including:

* “To Build a Fire” by Jack London

* An opportunity for former Scouts to tell of their adventures when they were boys

The Scouts were introduced to a display of Scouting memorabilia belonging to Stephen Bohrer. The display will remain in the library display cases throughout the month of February.

Contributing to the success of this celebration were Salai Taylor, Library Manager; Heinz Bergann, Director of Alamosa Parks, Library and Recreation; Boy Scouts of Troop 307, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Alamosa, Eric Burt, Scoutmaster; Caleb Babcock, Senior Patrol Leader

In the future this event may grow to include other Scout troops in Alamosa as well as Cub Scouts and Venture Crews.
