ALAMOSA —The Veterans Out-Patient Clinic received a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs flag from Frank “Boogie” Romero and his wife, Dorothy, courtesy of State Senator Larry Crowder and supported by the American Legion, Dickey Springer Post 113.

The Romeros have been actively involved in assuring that the places like the Veteran’s Out-Patient Clinic keep a proper flag flying. Another passion of the Romeros is their service to veterans. To this end, they are active in the Elks National Veterans Service Commission (ENVSC). This commission was established in 1917 to help serve veterans.

As part of their work with the ENVSC, the Romero’s make weekly visits to the veterans at the Colorado State Veterans Center at Homelake. They receive $100 a month from the ENVSC to purchase items such as shampoo, toothpaste, tooth brushes, socks, gloves, shoe shine kits, candy, and many other items to be put together as a gift box which they provide to the residents of Homelake and other local veterans. They also prepare these gift boxes for the men and women serving our country around the world. Many soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines from the San Luis Valley and from other parts of Colorado have benefited from these gift boxes as a reminder that people from home remember and support them.

Through the dedication of the Romeros, no veteran wants for warm socks and gloves. As they continue to provide this service, Dorothy and Boogie would like to request that if anyone knows of someone serving in the military, please let them know so that a gift box can be sent to them. They can be reached at 589-4549.
