Creede Community Players present 'Night of January 16'

Posted: Saturday, Jan 12th, 2013

CREEDE — It is the early 1930’s, the beginning of the Great Depression. Prohibition is still in effect.

With the crash of the Stock Market in 1929, many of the world’s richest men have lost their entire fortunes. Many of those same men, unable to cope with the loss of their fortunes, committed suicide.

Personal income has dropped as much as 50 percent, crop prices 60 percent, unemployment has soared to over 25 percent.

In the midst of these hard times Karen Andre goes on trial for the murder of her boss, Bjorn Faulkner, a world renowned financial giant.

While the prosecuting attorney tries to prove that Karen Andre did murder Bjorn Faulkner, Karen’s defense attorney tries to show that Bjorn killed himself. Witnesses for both sides offer testimony that is insightful and often amusing. Is Karen Andre guilty or innocent?

The jury, summoned from members of the audience, will decide. The district attorney will instruct the jury to consider only the facts. The defense will ask the jury to search their souls.

The Creede Community Players will present Night of January 16 the last two weekends in January and the first weekend in February at CRT’s Ruth Theatre.

This drama-comedy written by Ayn Rand in the early 1930’s and set in the melting pot city of New York, portrays both rich and poor people, and some of the often colorful ways they strive to rise above the hard times.

Performances will be Friday and Saturday, January 18, 19, 25, 26, February 1 and 2 at 7 p.m. Sunday, January 20, 27, and February 3 at 1:30 p.m. Tickets go on sale 45 minutes before the show.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for students. For reservations call 719-658-1126.
