ALAMOSA — Alamosa middle and high school students raised more than $800 for La Puente during a community service project initiative through the Gaining Early Awareness And Readiness For Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) program.

GEAR UP Pre-Collegiate Counselor Liz Tabeling-Garcia explained the GEAR UP youth at each school, Ortega Middle School and Alamosa High School competed to see which group could raise the most funds for the local homeless shelter. The winning group would receive a pizza party.

“They did so well we did a party for both of them,” Tabeling-Garcia said.

The high school youth raised $445 and the middle school youth raised $390.

The youth were encouraged that every cent matters. Students put jars in their households, and many filled them up. One youth brought in $100 of her own money. She said, “It’s my money and I want to give it.”

Tabeling-Garcia said the idea of the project was for youth to learn to give form their hearts and understand what it is like to give back to their communities.

The youth wanted the money to go to La Puente, and they were educated as to how much even small contributions mean to the shelter home and its associated services such as the food bank.
